Sociopaths: Impaired Sense of Smell

A study by Mahmut & Stevenson (2012) has found impaired senses of smell in people with sociopathic tendencies.
The study sample consisted of 79 subjects, and the sample was taken from the community (as opposed to a psychiatric clinic). 
Researchers found that people that scored highly on sociopathic traits had more difficulty identifying scents and differentiating between scents.
The researchers hypothesize that not only may sociopathic behavior be connected to frontal brain impairment, but there may also be impairment in other olfactory areas of the brain. The amygdala is one of the parts of the brain that process olfactory sensations, or smells. The amgydala is also connected to social interaction and aggression, two traits that may be found in people with sociopathic behavior.
The study authors stated that it would be more difficult to "fake good" or "fake bad" on an olfactory test.  
Obviously there need to be more studies with a higher sample size in order to make further connections between sociopathic behavior and sense of smell.

Voter ID Laws Take Aim At College-Student Voters-Hufffington Post


In Tennessee, a new law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls explicitly excludes student IDs.
In Wisconsin, college students are newly disallowed from using university-provided housing lists or corroboration from other students to verify their residence.
Florida's reduction in early voting days is expected to reduce the number of young and first-time voters there.
And Pennsylvania's voter identification bill, still on the books for now, disallows many student IDs and non-Pennsylvania driver's licenses, which means out-of-state students may be turned away at the polls.

The instinctive defense mechanisms that the ego hides behind will crumble, and your self and soul will become a transparent vehicle through which the evolutionary impulse can work in this world.

Essentially, I repost articles which I find of interest, be they political, psychological, parenting guidelines, nutrition, etc. Any that I post are the result and leanings, of my views subsequent to years of parenting; and 20 years of clinical/therapeutic work with families, especially children and youth. I provide the source references, as well as some links to the original works. Information provided on this site is meant to complement, and not replace, any advice or information from a medical health professional. As a qualified mental health professional, I try to remain scrupulous about the efficacy of articles I might present, often in the way of comment. In addition, while I have a number of mentors, spiritual and otherwise, I nevertheless respect each person's need to have their own, i.e., you may see my enthusiasm for someone, but they are certainly, and hardly, the only one who has this knowledge. In addition, you will observe that I may paste two contradictory articles. I still respect your intelligence, and capacity for discernment.
